During the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the province of Samut Prakan was established, with a major administrative center at Prapadaeng. To secure the town, forts, town moats, and walls were built. In 1819, King Rama II abandoned Prapadaeng and created a new administrative capital in Samut Prakan. Six forts are placed on either side of the Chao Phraya River, with one on an island in the river. The six forts were all engaged in the 13 July 1893 Paknam incident.
